Dosetsu Tachibana, retainer to the Otomo, he was famously known as Oni Dosetsu. It is said that in his youth he sought shelter under a tree during a rainstorm and was struck by lightning. In defiance, he struck the lightning bolt with his sword Chidori (A Thousand Birds). Surviving the incident, he renamed his sword Raikiri (Lightning Cutter) and though he suffered partial paralysis from then on, he continued to participate in numerous battles. Despite his condition, his battle prowess and tactical genius was so feared he was thought of more as a demon than a man by his enemies. He was 72 years old when he was killed in battle. The life of Dosetsu Tachibana stands as a testament to the resolve of a samurai unwilling to let disability or age stand in the way of duty to one’s lord.

“When a warrior takes a daimyo as his master, he understands the requirements of loyalty and duty. When his master is flourishing this is a matter of course, but even when something unexpected happens to his master and he has all sorts of troubles, a samurai is still fiercely loyal and does not leave his master’s side even when a hundred allies are reduced to ten, even when ten are reduced to one, so steadfastly loyal in battle as to disregard his own life.” - Taira Shigesuke

“The essence of service is to make up your mind privately, calling the God of War to witness, that you will not have others do what you should do yourself, be it leading a charge as first lancer, or leading a siege as first charioteer, or leading the rearguard in retreat when your side suffers a reverse, or standing up to a barrage of arrows in place of your lord, or standing firm to die a heroic death in battle.” - Taira Shigesuke

“In all things, I have sought clarity. I face the troubles and problems of life and death willingly. Virtue, integrity and courage are my priorities. I can be approached, but never pushed; befriended but never coerced; killed but never shamed.” - Yi Sun-sin, Naval Commander of the Three Provinces, Hero of the Imjin War

“On the warrior’s path only three things are essential: loyalty, duty and valor. We speak of samurai who work loyally, samurai who are faithful to duty, and samurai who are courageous and strong. Warriors who combine these three virtues in one person are considered samurai of the highest order.” - Taira Shigesuke

“The true attitude of a warrior is to determine that if you are going to have to give up your life anyway, you may as well die heroically, startling enemies and allies alike, regretted by lords and commanders, an honor to your posterity for all time.” - Taira Shigesuke

“When one has made a decision to kill a person, even if it will be difficult to succeed by advancing straight ahead, it will not do to think about going at it in a long roundabout way. One’s heart may slacken, he may miss his chance, and by and large there will be no success,
The Way of the Samurai is one of immediacy, and it is best to dash in headlong.” - Hagakure

“Honor is a fool’s prize. Glory is of no use to the dead.”
”The dark side offers power for power’s sake. You must crave it. Covet it. You must seek power above all else, with no reservation or hesitation.”
”The Force will change you. It will transform you. Some fear this change. The teachings of the Jedi are focused on fighting and controlling this transformation. That is why those who serve the light are limited in what they accomplish. True power can come only to those who embrace the transformation. There can be no compromise. Mercy, compassion, loyalty: all these things will prevent you from claiming what is rightfully yours. Those who follow the dark side must cast aside these conceits. Those who do not—those who try to walk the path of moderation—will fail, dragged down by their own weakness.”  - Darth Revan
